چکیده

Many load balancing algorithms balance the load according to a topology. Its choice can significantly influence the performance of the algorithm. We consider the two phase balancing model. The first phase calculates a balancing flow with respect to this topology by a diffusion scheme. Its time requirement depends on the maximum node degree and on the number of eigenvalues of the network. The second phase migrates the load according to this flow. A small flow volume and a small diameter of the graph keeps the time requirement of this phase low. We compare and propose several network topologies based on these measurements. Several experiments on a Cray T3E and on a cluster of PCs confirm our cost functions for both balancing phases.

Towards Optimal Performance in Distributed Memory Systems with Buffer Constraints Using Divisible Load Analysis

This chapter investigates scheduling a divisible task in distributed memory systems with finite-size buffer constraints. Two types of network topologies are considered: a single-level tree network and a m-dimensional hypercube network. First, this chapter presents the closed-form solutions for the case with infinite-size buffers. Based on these solutions, an iterative strategy, referred to as I...

Designing Logical Topology for Wireless Sensor Networks: a Multi-chain Oriented Approach

An optimal logical topology of a wireless sensor network (WSN) facilitates the deployed sensor nodes to communicate with each other with little overheads, lowers energy consumption, lengthens lifetime of the network, provides scalability, increases reliability, and reduces latency. Designing an optimal logical topology for a WSN thus needs to consider numerous factors. Chain oriented topologies...

A Space-Based Generic Pattern for Self-Initiative Load Balancing Agents

Load-Balancing is a significant problem in heterogeneous distributed systems. There exist many load balancing algorithms, however, most approaches are very problem specific oriented and a comparison is therefore complex. This paper proposes a generic architectural pattern for a load balancing framework that allows for the plugging of different load balancing algorithms, reaching from unintellig...

Let It Flow: Resilient Asymmetric Load Balancing with Flowlet Switching

Datacenter networks require efficient multi-path load balancing to achieve high bisection bandwidth. Despite much progress in recent years towards addressing this challenge, a load balancing design that is both simple to implement and resilient to network asymmetry has remained elusive. In this paper, we show that flowlet switching, an idea first proposed more than a decade ago, is a powerful t...
